This project replaced the existing York Bridge No. 225C on NE 116th Street at the Sammamish River. The new structure includes a pile supported concrete arch substructure with a precast girder and cast in place deck superstructure. Fifty-two closed end pipe piles 24” in diameter were necessary to support the new bridge structure. The tonnage required for support of Piers 1 to 3 was 450 tons, requiring piles to be driven to depths of 93’ to 142’ for embedment. The Pier 4 piles were over-driven to 550 tons in anticipation of settlement issues expected by the design. The soils were predominately soft until bedrock was reached, so a hammer with a hydraulic trip was used to facilitate driving in these soft conditions.
