Client/Owner: Oregon Department of Transportation in Cooperation with Portland Parks & Recreation
Location: Portland, OR
Cost: $3,400,000 (Total Contract Value)

This project included three separate bridges for the Portland Parks & Recreation trail system.  The Johnson Creek Bridge was a 190’ long plate girder structure consisting of six segments, spliced in place.  A significant amount of pre-decking and partial attachment of permanent cross bracing allowed for rapid erection and bolt-up.  Secondly was the Union Pacific Railroad crossing, a 170’ long pre-fabricated truss, 15’ wide and 12’ tall.  Three truss sections were spliced with bolts prior to setting in final position.  The most challenging structure was over Highway 99E (McLoughlin Blvd).  The 275’ long structure has a 240’ spring span with 45’ tall arches.  The arches consist of twin 18” diameter pipes flared from 22’ apart to 3’ apart at mid span, approximately 60’ above the roadway.  Precast deck sections 10’ long by 15’ wide were pinned to suspender rods and then finished with a cast-in-place topping slab.

The Portland Parks & Recreation website stated on October 27, 2005:
“It is a real pleasure to have a top-notch contractor like Mowat Construction to work with on our project.  After witnessing their performance this past week, it’s obvious why they have the reputation as one of the better bridge contractors in the business.  The entire week was a well-orchestrated use of equipment and manpower as they moved from one end of the project to the other”.
