The project consisted of the removal and replacement of an existing timber stringer bridge (#423 over Dubuque Creek) and a truss bridge (#44 over the Pilchuck River), both built in the 1930’s. Site improvements included detention and retention ponds, clearing for improved sight distances, lane widening and the addition of turning lanes at the intersection of Machias and OK Mill Road. The new Bridge #423 was built in two stages to keep traffic flowing, with one-way traffic controlled by the use of a temporary signal. The 66’ new bridge was made with precast concrete bulb-T’s. The HP 14x89 pile foundation was installed and roughly half of the piles were changed from vertical to battered angles to accommodate overhead power lines. The new Bridge #44 was built utilizing two temporary falsework bents to support the 250’ span of structural steel during erection. To provide protection of the galvanic coating during erection, deck forming, and concrete placement - shrink wrap was used to stop concrete splatter from reaching the steel.
