Client/Owner: Snohomish County
Location: Darrington, WA
Cost: $14,100,000 (Total Contract Value)

This project involved replacing the existing two span double steel truss bridge with a larger, stronger single truss bridge that still utilizes the two span system.  The new bridge was launched across the Sauk River from east to west.  The original steel truss bridge built in 1930 was removed after the traffic was shifted to the new bridge.  Thirty-two closed end pipe piles 24” in diameter provide support for the 200’ long temporary trestle and bridge launching system.  The support tonnage required from these piles varies from 275 ton to 150 ton with 17’ of embedment.  The subsurface ground conditions were very unusual.  The ground conditions for the first 10’ to 15’ were ideal hard soils, but after that the soil conditions deteriorated rapidly with little or no load bearing capacity.  The depth and capacity needs of the original plan were ultimately not sufficient, which required the crew to drive an additional 12 piles to gain the overall capacity needed for the launching system.
