Fifty years of hard use and the Nisqually Earthquake of 2001 had taken a toll on the Meydenbauer Bridge in Bellevue, WA.  The old bridge was demolished and replaced by a new structure meeting federal and state seismic-safety standards.  The project approach included special efforts to ensure preservation of the mature landscape and old trees.  The substructure consists of two abutments and two intermediate columns rising from the sides of the park at roughly 55 degrees.  The superstructure is a 265 LF, cast-in-place box girder with a center span of 122 feet.  The bottom soffit of each span has a parabolic curve.  The bridge is reinforced with reinforcing steel only; no post-tensioning was utilized.  Through creative coordination and staging, the project was completed ahead of schedule.
