The Broadway Bridge was originally constructed in 1913 with an overall length of 1,700 LF and consisting of six fixed truss spans plus one 300 LF "rawl" bascule twin leaf draw span. Our project involved renovation of the bridge approaches and draw span. On the fixed spans approaching both sides of the draw span, a portion of the concrete road deck and sidewalk deck was replaced, and the steel stringers repaired or replaced. The draw span renovation included new stringers and an experimental "fiber reinforced polymer" deck system with overlay. The sidewalk stringers and metal deck system were also repaired or replaced. All lead based paint was removed from the bridge steel below road deck level and repainted within containment structures. Maintenance of traffic included opening both leafs of the draw span for ship traffic every 4th day. Balancing the draw span leafs for opening required utilizing 500,000 pounds of concrete block weights strategically placed, affixed, adjusted, and removed as renovation progressed through removal then reconstruction of bridge sections.
