The George Washington Bridge, better known in Seattle as the Aurora Bridge, was constructed in 1929.  This six-lane, high level, steel arch bridge crosses Lake Union in downtown Seattle.  Due to earthquake concerns the structure required modifications to allow a theoretical bridge movement of 11-inches in any direction without failure.  The project included bearing replacement at the center piers and bridge approaches, installation of shock transmission units, structural steel bridge stiffening, rivet replacement and expansion joints.  To accomplish the bearing replacement, huge jacking frames were temporarily installed at the main center piers to lift and hold up the eight million pounds of dead and live loading reactions at each bearing.
