Mowat Construction Company began in 1964 when its founder, David A. Mowat, formed David A. Mowat Company. Construction was a natural choice for Dave Mowat, who is from a family of contractors and developers. His grandfather Andrew “A.F.” Mowat was a carpenter from the Orkney Islands in Northern Scotland who started his own company and participated in the construction of many Seattle landmarks, including the original Pike Place Market. Later, Dave’s father Don and his uncle Bud formed Mowat Brothers Construction. Most of their work centered on public projects, such as military barracks at Ft. Lewis, various post office buildings, and the first Burgermaster in Seattle’s University District.
Initially, David A. Mowat Company and its workforce of union personnel focused on municipal public works and building projects, including street improvements for various cities and counties, high schools and elementary schools, institutional projects such as the Seattle National Guard Armory and the Battelle Marine Research Laboratory in Sequim, WA. As the pool of talented people increased Mowat’s s focus shifted to heavy/highway and bridge construction. Bridges completing the Interstate 90/Interstate 5 connection, major bridge overlays, interstate widenings, and HOV lane development followed in Washington and Oregon.

In 1994, Dave Mowat and his son Mark formed Mowat Construction Company, continuing the family ties. The on-going focus has been on our people without whom we couldn’t have undertaken such civil and structural projects as large subterranean structures on a nuclear reservation, unique bridges in size and design, remodeling and rehabilitating structures to meet today’s demands through seismic retrofitting, bridge rail improvements, and mechanical upgrades.
Throughout Mowat’s history, our skilled team has provided solutions within the ever-changing construction arena. With a high ratio of professional engineers and many years of experience, we have the ability to work with unique specifications, including design/build projects. We’re proud to be a union contractor; from our inception, union personnel have provided the skill and expertise to successfully complete each job.
